I’ve gotta say, some birds know how to show off. They’ve got flair. They strike flashy poses. And sometimes you find one that just struts around like it knows the world is its bird cage and we’re just living in it.
For instance, take another classic bird—the American Robin (sometimes confused with the similarly colored, but more brightly orange Baltimore Oriole).
One fun fact about American Robins is that their color intensity differs by region, with East Coast Robins being brighter than West Coast ones. They live in most of the continental United States year round and so are a common sight.
The American Robin also has a pleasant and very familiar bird call. (In fact, its song comes as a built-in wakeup tone option on some artificial sunrise alarm clocks.)
And so, with this fine bird in mind, I offer the following ode in the vein of The Guess Who:
American Robin, stay here with me
American Robin, don’t let me be
Do come a hangin' around my door
I do want to see your face some more
I got more birding things to do
I’ll spend my time growin' old with you
Now Robin, I said stay near
American Robin, listen what I say
American Robin, stay here with me
American Robin, don’t let me be
Do come a hangin' around my door
I do want to see your face some more
Colored birds can hypnotize
Sparkle all the birders’ eyes
Now Robin, I said stay near
American Robin, listen what I say-ay-ay-ay
And if you thought this week’s Bird Time! was a hoot, just wait until I manage to photograph an actual owl.
Until next (Bird!) time,
